FY27 HPC Allocation Cycle Requests Due June 11

On behalf of CMEI, NLR runs an annual open call for research and development projects to request use of a defined quantity, or allocation, of the compute resources at NLR. This notification serves as the announcement of this call for allocation requests.

January 2026 Kestrel System Time

Jan. 21, 2026

Kestrel will undergo scheduled downtime for maintenance and upgrades, and will be out of service starting on Tuesday, January 20th, at 6:00 a.m. and extending through Friday, January 30th.

Planned Network Outage: July 11–13

A scheduled network outage will take place between July 11 and July 13, 2025.

Data Center Outage: 06/26-07/03

June 25, 2025

Planned maintenance outage for the ESIF HPC Data Center. All hosted systems will be unavailable.

Applications now being accepted for FY 26 HPC Allocations

June 11, 2025

The National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) has released the call for FY 26 requests for computing on Kestrel, NREL's 3rd generation supercomputer. Research and development projects that are funded by EERE Offices as well as NREL projects funded by a non-EERE source are eligible to apply for computing resources for the FY 26 allocation period of performance, which runs Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2026.

Kestrel Student Allocations Open for Application

Last year, we launched a new effort to engage more students in computing and to amplify how computing is used for EERE work. Again, this year, we’re inviting students to get involved with Kestrel for FY25. Undergraduate and graduate students from any U.S. college or university can apply for time on Kestrel for their EERE mission-related research project.
