Alexei Tchnerniak – Affordable Hydrogen
With GeoKiln, Alexei Tchnerniak is producing hydrogen directly underground through controlled thermal stimulation, enabling scalable energy.
About
Alexei Tchnerniak
Alexei Tcherniak is the founder and chief executive officer of GeoKiln, which is developing a technology to produce hydrogen underground by applying controlled thermal stimulation to naturally occurring ultramafic rocks. The approach creates a predictable, scalable source of hydrogen using existing geological resources to support industrial operations, power generation, and emerging energy demands.
During West Gate, Tcherniak is collaborating with NLR's subsurface experts to characterize reaction kinetics and products in the initial field demonstration of GeoKiln's Manufactured Subsurface Hydrogen production process.
Critical Need
Growing demand from advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and data centers is increasing the need for reliable, affordable, and domestic energy resources. While hydrogen has the potential to support a more resilient energy system, current production methods can be expensive, energy intensive, and dependent on limited infrastructure. GeoKiln addresses this challenge by creating a new pathway for scalable hydrogen production using abundant domestic geological resources.
Potential Impact
GeoKiln's technology has the potential to establish a new domestic source of hydrogen to support industrial growth, power generation, and energy security. By enabling engineered hydrogen production within existing geological formations, the technology can provide a reliable energy resource that complements current infrastructure and meets rising demand from emerging industries.
Innovation and Advantages
GeoKiln is transforming hydrogen production from a resource discovery challenge into an engineered energy solution. Instead of relying on rare, naturally occurring hydrogen deposits, the company’s precision thermal stimulation technology creates controlled hydrogen generation within suitable rock formations. By combining advanced subsurface modeling with proprietary technology, GeoKiln is developing a scalable platform for producing domestic hydrogen at the scale needed for industry and future energy demands.
