Programs for Students
Inspire the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) innovators by bringing NLR's free educational programs to your classroom, applying for NLR and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs, or registering to visit the laboratory.
Field Trips, Tours and Classroom Visits
NLR offers the following programs online and in person—either at its South Table Mountain (STM) campus in Golden, Colorado, or by traveling to locations within a 25-mile distance of STM. Email the NLR Education Center team for details and to check availability. See additional NLR Education Resources for Students.
Stories and STEM With NLR for Grades K–3
Reserve a 45-minute Stories and STEM With NLR session for a STEM-themed story and art activity.
Grade K–6 Classroom Experiments
Invite NLR to join your class for a 60-minute experiment related to the integration of varying energy technologies.
See Grade 4–8 programs for more opportunities for students in the upper range of this age group.
Grade 4–8 In-Person Field Trips
Register for a 2-hour interactive experience at NLR for students in grades 4–8. NLR staff will lead students through hands-on experiments to better understand the challenges of—and NLR's solutions to—incorporating next-generation energy technologies into our aging electrical grid infrastructure.
Grade 4–8 Virtual Tours
Register for a 1-hour virtual "walking" tour to learn more about NLR's campus. Students will visit buildings across the three NLR campuses and learn about the evolution to energy-efficient architecture and cutting-edge research that has helped us build our living laboratory.
High School In-Person Field Trips
Register for this high school field trip in which students will dive into chemistry and physics while exploring how these sciences are helping researchers develop cutting-edge energy technologies.
High School Virtual Tours
Register for this 1-hour virtual "walking" tour for high school students , who will visit buildings and lab spaces across NLR's three campuses, learn about the evolution to energy-efficient architecture, and dive into the cutting-edge research that drives NLR to be a living laboratory.
High School In-Person Tours
Register for in-person tours for high school students, 2-hour tours of one or two NLR facilities, along with an activity or presentation by an NLR researcher. Students will learn about energy-efficient building design and how it supports NLR's vision for the future.
NLR-SLAC Pathway Summer School Program
This 6-week program is designed to empower high school students and recent high school graduates in the Denver and San Francisco Bay areas by providing student-driven, project-based, hands-on learning experiences at NLR and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The program will help produce a skilled workforce.
